Tabarna
Tabarna brings the Hittite legacy of honoring food to the present.
In Hittite culture, dining is one of the most important rituals. They believed that everything from nature was sacred. Therefore, food was seen as a gift from nature. Feasts, offerings, communal meals.. these were indispensable parts of their culture and rituals. One day, Hattusili, one of the most important kings of the Hittites, gave advice to his son, saying, “Ninda an ezzateni watar ma ekuteni” – “Now you wil eat the bread, and you will drink the water.” This advice became an important part of Hittite rituals. Bread and water from nature are related to life; eat and drink them so that life may bless you…
This story greatly inspired us when designing our dining table. The name “Tabarna” comes from the nick-name that the Hittite King Hattusili, who valued food and its sanctity, gave himself. On the handmade, engraved silver-plated brass detail on the front, the famous advice of King Hattusili;
“Ninda an ezzateni watar ma ekuteni,” is inscribed in cuneiform script, encircling the table as a reminder of the sanctity of eating and being able to eat.
Lavish and carefully prepared tables and respect for food form the solid structure of the tradition that has come from the Hittites to the present day and stil exists in Anatolia. We designed this table with the wish that you can set tables surrounded by pleasant conversations and never lacking in crowd.
